Grant stars in homecoming as Falcons stun Capras

Cameron Stallard QRL Central correspondent

The Sunshine Coast Falcons have comfortably kept their undefeated start to the season alive with a 52-6 defeat over the Central Queensland Capras.

The home side had no answers for the ladder leaders in Round 7 at Browne Park, as they dominated in front of a strong Easter Thursday crowd.

An especially large contingent gathered for the homecoming of incumbent Falcons hooker and former Yeppoon local Harry Grant, who lined up against older brother George, reliving their childhood footy days in the backyard.

Despite an early scare, the visitors wasted no time in their quest to take home the Easter chocolates, with Nicho Hynes crossing under the posts in the seventh minute.

Grant didn’t take long to relish his opportunity back at home and scooted from dummy half to score in the 12th minute.

Winger Riley Moore crossed for the men in yellow in the following set, the Falcons accelerating to an 18-0 lead after 20 minutes.

A further try to Todd Murphy in the 26th minute and Joe Stimson’s four-pointer just before half time left the Capras shocked heading into the break, trailing 28-0.

Despite strong efforts from middle forwards Aaron Pene and Jamie Hill, more points ensued early in the second half with Daniel Dole crossing in the 47th minute.

After a number of attacking sets, Elijah Anderson - on debut - finally broke the drought for the home side in the 65th minute with a skilful try on the left edge.

Sadly for the home fans, that was the last of the good news as the Falcons exhibited a clinic in the final 10 minutes with Siti Moceidreke bagging two tries in the final moments as well as Stimson adding another to his tally – to see the Falcons fly home.

Falcons coach Eric Smith said he was most happy with the defensive effort shown tonight.

“Tonight, we weren’t as clinical as we wanted to be and the Capras started in the first 15-20 minutes with plenty of energy, good line speed and probably had the better of us in the opening 10 minutes,” Smith said.

“I think we executed some really good attacking plays, but I was probably more happy with our defensive effort tonight.

“We turned over a fair bit of footy and there were quite a few penalties against us, but I think we defended those really well."

The win continues the Falcons’ unbeaten start to 2019, a feat Smith said was a great effort.

“It’s a massive achievement for this group to be seven weeks in to a competition as strong as the Intrust Super Cup and still be undefeated,” Smith said.

“It’s still early days though and we’ve got plenty to work on at training after the break.”
